The comunity of Triengen had announced last week, that the crucifixes in the classrooms of two children would be removed. Their father, member of FAS, had claimed, that the comunity should respect a sentence of the Federal Court of 1990, saying that a crucifix doesn’t go with the necessary neutrality of a public school.
Yesterday the comunity announced, that there will now be stone crosses in the classrooms.
Lukas Niederberger, theologist in nearby Lucerne, explained to the press, that crosses are not to be perceived as a “christian logo” but as an ancient symbol already used by the cave dwellers.

After the crucifix a cross from a grave…. The strategy to save crosses/crucifxes in classrooms of public schools by giving them an secular meaning must fail: in 2009 the European Court of Human Rights did state: “The Court was unable to grasp how the display, in classrooms in State schools, of a symbol that could reasonably be associated with Catholicism (the majority religion in Italy) could serve the educational pluralism that was essential to the preservation of a „democratic society“ as that was conceived by the Convention, a pluralism that was recognised by the Italian Constitutional Court.”
