Teacher dismissed after dispute over crucifix in classroom

At Stalden (VS) a secondary teacher has been dismissed last friday after a dispute with the local school authorities over a crucifix.

Valentin Abgottson, president of the cantonal section of the Freethiner’s Society, did remove the crucifix already more than a year ago – without any reaction until he approached cantonal an local adminstrations with questions about the effects of an sentence of the highest swiss court in 1990 saying:
« A crucifix in a clasrom doesn’t go with religious neutrality of the state according to the swiss constitution ».

Local and cantonal funtionaries refer to the cantonal education law, stating

Art. 3 General mission of school
The schools of the Canton Valais are supporting the families in the éducation of their childern. For that purpose the schools seek the collaboration with the recognised churches. Schools are striving to develop the morals, the intellectual and physical capacities of the pupils in order to prepare them for their duties als humans and christian

Ct. LU

At Triengen (LU) a conflict between a father of two an the local authoroties about taking down a crucifix in the classrooms of his childern seem first to escalate but the president of the school now  shows to decide reasonably in favour of the father.

The comunity counsel of Cadro did approve in February 2010 of the wish of the local catholic church to put up a crucifix in the hall of the schoolhouse – 20 years after the sentence of the highest court against this very comunty in the matter of crucifixes in classrooms.
